coffee cupEvery week I come across an article or two that I find very helpful to me as a Baby Boomer and think may be of some interest to you, the community, as well.

They may be from an online news source, another Blog or Website or something I found surfing around the Internet. They could even be something that was sent in by a reader of the Blog or a member of the Baby Boomer’s Forum.

Enjoy!

Dick Clark: He had a beat and you could dance with him by Roger Aylworth… As you are no doubt well aware, Dick Clark died this past week at the age of 82. Growing up in Philly (where the original Bandstand was aired on WFIL-TV) I have my own memories of my own. Read Rogers take on D.C. then share your own memories in comments.

I  hope you found this weeks choice(s) helpful and enjoyable. What did you think? Do you have any suggestions for next week?

Smile!

Smile!

Monday has always been a little bit of a let down, what with it being the beginning of the work week and all.

So to start things out on a bright note for the week, I bring you the…

Baby Boomers Monday Musings.

Hedging Your Bets

Father Sullivan was ministering to a man on his deathbed.

“Renounce Satan!” yelled Father Sullivan.

“No,” said the dying man.

“I say, renounce the devil and his works!”

“No,” the man repeats.

“And why, in the name of all that is holy, not?” asks Father Sullivan.

“Because,” said the dying man, “I want to wait until I see where I’m heading before I start annoying anybody.”

Hope that put a little smile on your face and Keep On Smilin’

The real BBUS post can be found here… Travel Tips for the Mature Traveler by Joe Hauckes © Baby Boomers U. S. (The Blog) . Not on Senior Zen!

This is a Guest Post by Ron of  Affair Travel. If you would like to Guest Post for Baby Boomers US, check out our Guest Post for Us page.

Reaching the retirement age allows most people to partake in activities that they had little time to before, one of which is traveling more often and maybe even further away. Now that you have the time and hopefully the funds to finance your travels, it might be time to brush up on a few travel tips for the baby boomer in mind.

Use the State Department site – As you must have seen and heard, in 2011 several regions and countries were deemed unsafe to travel by the State Department due to civil unrest and regime change. The US State Department site is a handy place to check and keep informed of areas that are unsafe to travel to. Before embarking on an overseas holiday take the time to research the situation in the destination country.

Remember your medication – Modern medication allows people to retain their quality of life and it is no secret that as the body matures, dependency on medication grows. By no means taking medication is a reason not to travel even to the most exotic of locations it simply requires preparation. Many people remember to stock up on their medication, which is all good and fine, only to forget the latest airport retractions on traveling with drugs and fluids.  Transportation Security Administration (part of Department of Homeland Security) offers a useful online resource that explains the latest restrictions allowing you to distribute your medication between your hand luggage and your normal luggage. Regardless of airport allowance, dispersing your medication between your bags is actually a safer way to travel so in case one bag is misplaced, you have a back up to rely upon.

Back up your prescriptions – Depending on the type of medication you take and the duration of your stay, you might require to top up your medication during your stay. If your journey takes you overseas you will find it handy to have your family doctor list alternative drugs that could replace your current drugs should these prove unobtainable for some reason. Furthermore, consider keeping a copy of your prescription with your travel documents and safely back home with a family member of friend.

Be wary of DVT – Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a life-threatening disorder that causes possible blood clots. Potentially anyone that travels by air is at risk of DVT, however studies suggest that those over the age of 40 years are at a bigger risk. Therefore it is recommended to walk the length of the cabin every 30 to 45 min together with performing a few simple exercises such as shoulder rolls, foot lifts and forward bend to reduce the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Travel insurance – Responsible holidaymakers are already aware of the benefits that travel insurance offers them and their families.  It is essential no matter your age and no matter the duration of your travels. As you mature, your medical circumstances might change. It is important to inform your insurance company prior to your travel to ensure that the policy remains valid. Even if your policy increases as a result of changes in circumstances, it is essential to have. And even if your medical circumstances have not changed, you may need to inform your insurers of your travels. Such as in the case of traveling to exotic places as you will be required to take regular vaccinations prior to keep our policy valid.

Inform your bank and credit card service – It is much safer to travel with minimal cash and use your bankcard when needed. The downside is that if your bankcard or credit card is cancelled, you are left with no means to pay for your holiday. Financial organizations now use behavioral spending habits to highlight possible fraud. If their systems find transactions that are outside your normal spending profile such as transactions from overseas, your account may be restricted. Therefore prior to your travels take the time to inform your bank and credit card issuer so restrictions won’t be applied on your overseas spending.

Enjoy your travel!
